The past two weeks has seen heartbreak and jubilation for several EFL sides, as the playoffs proved who was worth their mettle and who would be spending more time in each respective league.
It was also an opportunity for each club’s loan heroes to prove themselves on one of the biggest platforms in English football and become the hero their club deserved.
Over the years we’ve seen various loan stars shining in the playoffs and playing instrumental roles in seeing their sides promoted.
Here are your 2022/23 EFL Championship loan stars from each club:
Cody Drameh – Luton Town
Drameh has been a mainstay in this Luton side and it looks likely that his stay at Kenilworth Road will extend beyond his loan spell, following parent club Leeds’ relegation and Luton’s unlikely promotion.
Playing the entirety of Saturday’s dramatic playoff final victory over Coventry City, the young full back put in the numbers defensively, finishing with two tackles, intereceptions and clearances apiece, whilst making one key pass. He also featured prominently over the two legs against Sunderland, making five tackles in each of the two legs against the Wearsiders.
Callum Doyle – Coventry City
Another Doyle, also from Manchester City and also a midfielder who has been making a name for himself in the Second Tier this season (no relation to Tommy Doyle, fellow City loanee who has been ripping it up at Sheffield United this season), Callum Doyle has been a standout player for the Sky Blues this season, despite his tender age of just 19-years-old.
Having made his mark across the two legs against Boro, putting in a combined effort of three tackles, three interceptions, five clearances and one block across the two legs, it was the young City loanee who Sky Blues fans can be most proud of at the weekend, grinding out two tackles and three interceptions, as well as four clearances and a block before being taken off in the 115th minute.
City clearly have another starlet on their hands, so it will be interesting to see where Doyle heads off to next year. Perhaps Coventry again, or a relegated side such as Southampton, Leicester or Leeds, where he could learn the trade from players with Premier League experience and fashion himself into an even greater player.
Amad Diallo – Sunderland
Following a long awaited promotion from the third tier last year, it was great to see Sunderland up there challenging for playoffs this season. In particular, their loan strategy was most impressive, securing the signing of Manchester United’s Amad Diallo, who has been something of a starlet for them this season, solidifying that with a fabulous free kick against Luton to level the scoring in the first leg.
Further to this, Diallo impressed with a combined eight shots and 14 dribbles completed over the two legs, whilst also drawing four fouls. Proving himself a tricky and technical winger, this could be exactly what United need, with Sancho failing to cover himself in glory this season, and Elanga being less than fancied at Old Trafford under new boss Erik Ten Hag. It’s difficult not to see Diallo being a Premier League player next season – whether that comes in the form of another loan move, or at United.
Ryan Giles – Middlesbrough
Joining on loan from Wolves in the summer following several successful loan spells in the EFL, particularly at Cardiff last season, Giles’ stock was already high prior to signing for Boro. Over the course of the playoffs, he has shown all the qualities that his parent club are missing – a willingness to move the play forward from deep at a high tempo, whilst also digging his heels in and committing defensively.
Giles posted impressive combined stats over the two legs, coming up trumps defensively with seven tackles and clearances apiece, whilst also making one key pass and completing four dribbles. This is exactly the kind of player Wolves should be looking at next season, following rumours that both Jonny Otto and Rayan Ait-Nouri will be offloaded. Giles is another who could, and probably should, be playing Premier League football next year, or certainly top 3 Championship football.
That was the top loanees from the EFL Championship playoffs! We hope you enjoyed our series of articles and look forward to bringing you more as the loan market opens this summer!
